Episode 172: Breaking Generational Cycles of Body Shaming and Negative Self-Image with Susie Taaffe

Hey Mamas!

In this podcast episode, Susie Taaffe, CEO and founder of Skanties, an anti-shapewear brand, joins the host to discuss motherhood, body image, and self-acceptance. Susie shares her personal experiences as a single mom of three, the challenges of parenting, and the importance of gratitude even during tough times. She emphasizes the value of seeking help and the significance of capturing memories through videos. Susie also talks about her journey from engineering to entrepreneurship, aiming to empower women to love their bodies and reject societal pressures. The conversation covers the impact of our attitudes on children, breaking cycles of negativity, and the joy of sharing creativity. Susie is currently planning to relocate to the US to expand her business and provide her daughter with better opportunities in dramatic arts.

The Early Days: Challenges and Revelations

Becoming a mother was a transformative experience for Susie. She vividly recalls the joy of welcoming her first child, at the age of 29. However, by the time her third child arrived, the cumulative stress of parenting began to take its toll. Sleep issues and allergies to formula preservatives led to a period of intense sleep deprivation and concern.

Susie’s journey was further complicated when she became a single mom to her three young children. She shared a poignant reminder that resonated with me: "This too shall pass." In the darkest hours, Susie clung to gratitude, remembering a friend who lost her baby to SIDS and another who sat beside a grieving mother. These stories served as a stark reminder to cherish even the most challenging moments with our children.

The Power of Support and Self-Care

One of the most significant insights from our discussion was the importance of seeking help. Susie emphasized that mothers often place themselves at the bottom of the priority list, but to give to others, we must have something to give from. It wasn't until Susie hired an au pair that she felt she could manage again. Her advice to new mothers is clear: find support, whether it's family, friends, or community resources. Even a couple of hours of rest can make a world of difference.

Breaking Stereotypes and Embracing Individuality

Susie and I delved into the societal pressures that shape our perceptions of motherhood and body image. She shared her transition from being an engineer to creating Skanties, driven by a passion for helping women feel good about themselves. We discussed the importance of challenging the stereotypes and expectations that don't serve us and customizing our lives to what works for us as individuals.

The Joy of Creativity and Sharing

Creativity emerged as a theme in our conversation. Susie encouraged listeners to find joy in creative pursuits, whether it's writing a storybook with your children, taking photos, or sharing talents on platforms like YouTube. These outlets for expression are not only fulfilling but also a way to connect with others and share happiness.

Cherishing Memories and Building Confidence

Looking back, Susie wishes she had taken more videos of her children when they were younger. She treasures the few clips she has, especially those capturing the unique quirks of her children's personalities. Her advice to new moms is to document these fleeting moments, not just in still photos but in videos that will become priceless memories.

We also touched on the importance of being present in those memories—getting in the pictures and videos with our children. This act of inclusion sends a powerful message about body confidence and self-acceptance to our kids.

Breaking Cycles and Inspiring Confidence

Our discussion was a profound reminder that we are the generation breaking cycles of negative self-image and body shaming. By accepting ourselves, we give permission to others to do the same. Motherhood has cracked open a new level of comfort and acceptance for me, and I hope it does the same for you.
